Your Toolkit as an American Airlines Pilot

Along with dedicated committee volunteers and staff who stand ready to help, APA provides a broad range of materials to help you navigate irregular operations, schedule changes, hotel issues, reassignments, and the other challenges we all encounter as pilots for American Airlines.

  • The Hotel Committee’s QRH – Quick Reference Hotels document answers your hotel, transportation, and layover questions and provides helpful solutions. We recommend downloading this QRH document to your AA iPad for ready access.
  • The Contract QRH page contains numerous Quick Reference Guides and important breakdowns of complex contractual language. The Contract Compliance Committee’s June 25 update includes a helpful step-by-step process for getting answers to your contract questions.
  • We all know the summer flying season is known for its intensity, unpredictability, long hours, and busy schedules. Managing fitness, resting, and combating fatigue can be a challenge. The Flight Time/Duty Time Committee’s Summer Fatigue Guide features practical tips and guidelines about making the fatigue call, pay protection, fatigue reporting, post-reporting guidance, and other timely topics.
  • The Compass Project’s guides are an invaluable resource, and the Compass Project’s Papyrus tool enables quick access to the guides and to every other resource you will need. From your mobile device, access Papyrus through the APA Pilot app. Type a few keywords of the subject you are searching for in the search box and documents containing those keywords will be at your fingertips. With its integrated auto-synchronization, Papyrus ensures you always have the most up-to-date documents. All Papyrus content is available offline.

Positive Rate Episode 58: Contract Compliance Committee

In the latest episode of our “Positive Rate” podcast, Communications Committee Deputy Chair CA Chris Ferguson talks with Contract Compliance Committee Chair CA Jason Saxer about the committee’s role in defending the Collective Bargaining Agreement, remedying errors, educating the membership, and other contract-related services.

Each episode of “Positive Rate” features APA subject-matter experts working on the membership’s behalf. The podcast is available through popular streaming services, including Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, and Spotify. You can search for “Positive Rate” or “Allied Pilots Association” on your platform of choice to subscribe and download. Your first opportunity to listen will be via AlliedPilots.org/Podcasts.

Margin Gap Widens as Airlines Report Earnings

This is a new message from the APA Investor Relations Committee.

United reported second-quarter earnings today, one week after Delta did the same. American’s management will report their earnings on July 24.

The following are the actual results from United and Delta along with an estimate for American courtesy of the Jefferies firm.

Pre-Tax Margin and Profit (excluding special items)
Delta11.6%
United11.0%
American*4.7%
*Jefferies estimate

In a note to investors, J.P. Morgan airlines analyst Jamie Baker highlighted the margin performance of United compared to Delta, noting the margin gap closure between those two airlines. Within that same note, Mr. Baker noted that United was “widening its lead over AAL” management.

During United’s earnings call, CEO Scott Kirby provided analysts and investors with the following commentary: “The two brand-loyal airlines continue to just gradually win share quarter-over-quarter, and the advantages that we have are structural, permanent, irreversible, and they’re growing, and it’s simply not practical to copy them.”

Logbook Enhancements Have Been Released

This is a new message from the APA Information Technology Steering Committee.

The APA Pilot app features an updated version of Logbook, which includes several fixes and enhancements and introduces an improved Export view, allowing users to export their career maps as KML files for use in Google Earth or any other KML-compatible mapping software.

Key enhancements include:

  • Searching by nose number no longer requires the N prefix.
  • Displaying trip days and total sequence flight time in the flight list.
  • An updated Flight Time by Month chart that shows all months, including those with no flights
  • Exporting a Career Map Projection showing all flights operated throughout your career (deadheads and cancelled flights not included).

Additional improvements include bug fixes and updates to the Career Map Projection, download view instructions, and other minor refinements.

We appreciate your continued support and look forward to rolling out even more enhancements to further serve our members.
