New Allied Pilots Association Video Shows Impact of American Airlines’ Unreliable Flight Operations on Passengers and Pilots

FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 27, 2020) — As pilots and passengers contend with American Airlines’ widely reported operational problems, the Allied Pilots Association (APA) today released a new video that juxtaposes the impact of unreliable operations with pilot solutions that respect passenger and pilot schedules.

The video comes as APA’s contract negotiations with American Airlines stretch into another year. It touches on some of the most significant issues that pilots have raised in negotiations, including the importance of reliable flight scheduling and quality of work life. It also comes as new airline rankings show American at or near the bottom in categories including on-time arrivals, cancellations, mishandled baggage, and delays.

“When an airline doesn’t operate reliably, it’s passengers and pilots who feel the pain. That’s why the pilots of American Airlines are leading the way, putting forth solutions designed to respect passenger and pilot schedules and to empower pilots to improve both airline reliability and the passenger experience,” said APA President Capt. Eric Ferguson. “American Airlines needs a new way of doing business to become the airline of choice for passengers, pilots, and investors.”

As the new video depicts, American Airlines’ operational struggles have not only generated headlines, they have also disrupted the lives and schedules of both passengers and pilots. The video highlights how pilots are “charting the course” by proposing solutions “that empower, inspire, and support” pilots and “deliver the reform we expect.”

APA continues to advocate for a contract that improves the way pilots are scheduled, how passengers are treated, and the working relationship between American Airlines and its pilots.

APA has also created a video series capturing the experiences of American Airlines pilots, illustrating both the challenges and rewards of their careers, as well as what happens when pilot and passenger schedules are not given the respect they deserve. The first video in the series is called “We Are Proud.” The second video is called “We’re All In It Together.”

Founded in 1963, the Allied Pilots Association — the largest independent pilots union in the United States — is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas.
