Allied Pilots Association Cites Importance of “Pilot’s Perspective” for New FAA Administrator, Identifies Recommended Candidates

FORT WORTH, Texas (Feb. 25, 2022) – The Allied Pilots Association (APA), representing the 14,000 pilots of American Airlines, emphasized the value of ensuring that the next FAA Administrator has a “pilot’s perspective.”

Current FAA Administrator Steve Dickson announced plans to resign for family reasons effective March 31.

“By federal law, the pilot in command of an aircraft — the Captain — ‘is directly responsible for, and is the final authority as to, the operation of that aircraft,’” said APA President Capt. Eric Ferguson. “It is our view that someone who understands and has borne the weight of that responsibility is best suited to lead the FAA.

“With that in mind, we have shared with President Biden and DOT Secretary Buttigieg a short list of recommended candidates for their consideration,” he said. “Each one of these highly qualified individuals has affirmed their willingness to serve in this vital, safety-sensitive capacity.”

The APA’s recommended candidates, in alphabetical order, for the new FAA Administrator:

  • First Officer John Boccieri, United Airlines; Vice Wing Commander, 911th Airlift Wing
  • Capt. David Bourne, Director, Teamsters Airline Division
  • Capt. Joe DePete, President, Air Line Pilots Association

“The U.S. aviation system remains the envy of the world for its safety and commercial success,” Ferguson said. “We deeply appreciate the opportunity to share our perspective with the White House and DOT and look forward to working with the new FAA Administrator to help sustain that stellar record.”

Founded in 1963, the Allied Pilots Association — the largest independent pilots union in the United States — is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. APA represents the 14,000 pilots of American Airlines, including several hundred pilots on full-time military leave of absence serving in the armed forces. The union’s website is AlliedPilots.org.
