Allied Pilots Association Lauds Outgoing FAA Administrator Steve Dickson for “Steady Leadership” and “Outstanding Service”

FORT WORTH, Texas (Feb. 17, 2022) – The Allied Pilots Association (APA), representing the 14,000 pilots of American Airlines, issued the following statement regarding FAA Administrator Steve Dickson, who announced plans to resign for family reasons effective March 31.

“Administrator Dickson has done a superb job of balancing competing interests and arriving at mutually beneficial solutions,” said APA President Capt. Eric Ferguson. “With three major crises overlapping his tenure — the 737 MAX grounding, the global pandemic, and the 5G rollout — he met the moment with calm, steady leadership.

“My airline labor colleagues and I agree that Administrator Dickson has been the most accessible FAA Administrator we have encountered. The willingness to engage all stakeholders has been especially welcome,” Capt. Ferguson said. “It’s unusual to see accolades from across the spectrum when a government official steps down, but that’s exactly what has occurred since Administrator Dickson announced his plans late yesterday. Those accolades attest to his skill in building consensus and satisfying diverse needs.

“We thank Administrator Dickson for his outstanding service as a true advocate for our industry and its people, and for promoting aviation safety. We wish him the very best.”

Founded in 1963, the Allied Pilots Association — the largest independent pilots union in the United States — is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. APA represents the 14,000 pilots of American Airlines, including several hundred pilots on full-time military leave of absence serving in the armed forces. The union’s website is AlliedPilots.org.
