APA Video Highlights Impact of American Airlines’ Unreliable Operations

FORT WORTH, Texas (Feb. 2, 2022) – The Allied Pilots Association (APA), representing the 14,000 pilots of American Airlines, today released a new video called “Wake Up Call” that highlights how unreliable scheduling practices affect passengers and pilots. The video comes as the airline struggles to attract and retain the next generation of professional pilots and as contract negotiations have stretched into their third year.

The video shows a senior captain speaking with a recently hired first officer about American Airlines’ operational shortcomings, including cancelled and delayed flights, the negative effect of last-minute schedule changes, and the lack of hotel scheduling support. As the captain in the video notes: “The only ‘normal’ thing around here is scheduling changes.”

“The pilots of American Airlines take pride in our work, and, as our senior pilot says in this video, our airline’s operations should never have gotten to this point,” said APA President Captain Eric Ferguson. “We know our passengers are as frustrated as we are, which is why APA has proposed solutions to the airline’s operational troubles. It’s time for management to embrace our solutions and finalize a new agreement so that we can ensure American Airlines becomes the carrier of choice for the next generation of pilots, our passengers, and the airline’s investors.”

This video is part of APA’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness of the challenges that passengers and pilots face when flying with American Airlines. Other videos released by the Allied Pilots Association include:

  • We Are Proud” depicts the day-to-day experience of being a pilot and a member of the Allied Pilots Association.
