Allied Pilots Association: “We Need to Act Now” to Finalize New Contract

FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 19, 2022) – The Allied Pilots Association (APA), representing the 14,000 pilots of American Airlines, emphasized the need to finalize a new pilot contract to position the airline for long-term success.

“By finalizing a new contract, we can help ensure American Airlines becomes the carrier of choice for the next generation of pilots, our passengers, and the airline’s investors,” said APA President Capt. Eric Ferguson. “We need to act now.”

To reinforce the importance of reaching agreement on a new contract, APA pilots will conduct informational picketing at DFW International Airport (Terminal C) from 9 a.m. to noon Central on Thursday, Jan. 20. In addition, APA unveiled a new 60-second commercial today as part of its ongoing digital advertising campaign targeting American Airlines management, frequent flyers, and the investment community. This new commercial highlights the need for more reliable scheduling, illustrating that pilots and passengers have a mutual interest in greater operational reliability.

“American Airlines needs to boost its revenue premium in order to return to profitability. To accomplish that, the airline must provide passengers with more reliable scheduling,” Capt. Ferguson said. “While the airline has performed somewhat better in recent weeks, American Airlines has long lagged the industry operationally. As professional pilots, we’re committed to providing quality service, and it frustrates us when the airline is unable to deliver.

“Fortunately, APA has solutions that, if adopted, will help improve the operation of our airline,” he said. “American Airlines also needs to ensure that the airline is sufficiently appealing to the next generation of aviators, with our nation’s major carriers now engaged in vigorous competition to attract top talent.

“In many respects, American Airlines’ future prospects will be shaped by the outcome of the contract negotiations now taking place between APA and management.”

Founded in 1963, the Allied Pilots Association — the largest independent pilots union in the United States — is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. APA represents the 14,000 pilots of American Airlines, including several hundred pilots on full-time military leave of absence serving in the armed forces. The union’s website is AlliedPilots.org.
