Pilot Groups Applaud Confirmation of Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger as ICAO Ambassador

The Allied Pilots Association (APA) and the Coalition of Airline Pilots Associations (CAPA) expressed their appreciation for the U.S. Senate’s confirmation of Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

“We want to thank the U.S. Senate for taking this important step,” said APA President Capt. Eric Ferguson. “There is simply no substitute for the opportunity that ICAO provides to build relationships and foster trust among participating member countries, and as a globally recognized aviation safety expert, Capt. Sullenberger is an outstanding choice to lead U.S. efforts. The U.S. aviation industry is the world’s largest, and it is imperative that we have an ambassador’s voice at the ICAO table.”

“Sully’s confirmation as the U.S. ambassador to ICAO will help ensure the United States exercises leadership in key areas such as pilot training, integrating advanced aviation technologies, enhancing aviation security, furthering efforts to reduce emissions and promote sustainability, and ensuring a strong supply of qualified airline pilots,” said CAPA President Capt. Larry Rooney.

Established in 1944, ICAO is a United Nations agency funded and directed by 193 national governments. It supports diplomacy and cooperation in establishing new international standards and recommended practices for civil aviation.

APA represents the 14,000 pilots who fly for American Airlines.

CAPA is a trade association comprised of more than 30,000 professional pilots, including the pilots of American Airlines and UPS, as well as the eight airlines collectively represented by Teamsters Locals 357, 1224, and 2750.
