President Trump Signs Pandemic Relief Bill That Provides Critical Aid to Airline Workers

FORT WORTH, Texas (Dec. 27, 2020) – The Allied Pilots Association (APA), representing the 15,000 pilots of American Airlines, is thankful that President Trump has signed into law a COVID relief package that will “return our airline workers back to work,” per a statement from the White House.

“Despite all of the uncertainty of the past few months, we are grateful for the outcome,” said Capt. Eric Ferguson, President of the Allied Pilots Association.

The legislation signed by President Trump on Sunday calls for the government to invest $15 billion in passenger airlines, for those airlines that recall their furloughed employees and restore service to smaller airports.

American Airlines has already recalled the 1,247 APA pilots who had been furloughed since October. They are among 19,000 American Airlines employees who are being brought off the sidelines.

“The passage of this emergency relief bill is testament to the efforts of so many for so long, throughout this unprecedented and devastating pandemic,” Ferguson said. “And we must continue because our work is not finished.

“This emergency relief for our industry is a critical part of the bridge to recovery along with vaccines and continued testing. We offer our most sincere thanks to the government, as well as all of our dedicated union volunteers who have worked tirelessly on behalf of our membership and our industry to achieve this monumental goal that was signed by the President just hours ago.”

Founded in 1963, the Allied Pilots Association — the largest independent pilots union in the United States — is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. APA represents the 15,000 pilots of American Airlines, including several hundred pilots on full-time military leave of absence serving in the armed forces. The union’s website is AlliedPilots.org.
