Allied Pilots Association Thanks Federal Government for “Wise Investment”

FORT WORTH, Texas (Dec. 22, 2020) – The Allied Pilots Association (APA), representing the 15,000 pilots of American Airlines, expresses its gratitude to Congress for passing legislation that will bring our membership back to full strength as we participate in the vital mission of vaccine distribution and contribute to the economic recovery. President Trump is expected to sign the bill soon.

“The airline industry must stand ready to carry out the critical mission of transporting the vaccines to help end the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Capt. Eric Ferguson, President of the Allied Pilots Association. “This wise investment in the industry will pay huge dividends as our aircraft speed the vaccine around the globe.”

The Emergency Coronavirus Relief Act of 2020 calls for the government to invest $15 billion in passenger airlines, if the airlines recall their furloughed employees and restore service to smaller airports. The funds sent to American Airlines should make it possible for 19,000 of our colleagues – including more than 1,240 pilots – to return to active status, which will have widespread economic benefits. Airlines for America estimates that every airline job generates more than 13 jobs in related fields such as hotels, restaurants, and rental cars.

More than 1,240 APA pilots have been furloughed since Oct. 1, the earliest date furloughs were allowed under the terms of the CARES Act’s Payroll Support Program.

“This bipartisan effort will increase the capacity of the airline industry to help drive economic recovery as the COVID-19 pandemic subsides,” Ferguson said.

Founded in 1963, the Allied Pilots Association — the largest independent pilots union in the United States — is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. APA represents the 15,000 pilots of American Airlines, including several hundred pilots on full-time military leave of absence serving in the armed forces. The union’s website is AlliedPilots.org.
