Allied Pilots Association: “We Look Forward to Participating” in Review of FAA Aircraft Certification Process

FORT WORTH, Texas (March 27, 2019) — The Allied Pilots Association (APA), representing the 15,000 pilots of American Airlines, voiced its support for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s establishment of an expert Special Committee to review Federal Aviation Administration procedures for certifying new aircraft.

“In announcing the Special Committee, Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao emphasized that ‘safety is the number one priority of the Department,’” said APA President Capt. Daniel F. Carey. “Safety is likewise paramount for APA, and we look forward to participating in this significant initiative.”

Capt. Carey confirmed that the DOT has requested recommendations from APA for qualified participants from within its pilot ranks.

“Professional pilots have a unique perspective on commercial aircraft, as we are the last line of defense for our passengers’ safety,” he said. “We’re the true ‘end users,’ and our feedback can be critical.”

Founded in 1963, the Allied Pilots Association — the largest independent pilots union in the United States — is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. APA represents the 15,000 pilots of American Airlines, including several hundred pilots on full-time military leave of absence serving in the armed forces. The union's website is AlliedPilots.org. American Airlines is the world's largest passenger airline.
