Allied Pilots Association President Disgusted by Qatar Airways CEO’s Comments

FORT WORTH, Texas (July 11, 2017) — Captain Dan Carey, president of the Allied Pilots Association, has a response to Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker’s comments about passengers “always being served by grandmothers” on “crap American carriers”:

“The recent comments by Sheik Akbar Al Baker disgust me as a husband, they disgust me as the father of three daughters, and they disgust me as a pilot who relies on the skill and experience of our cabin crewmembers — grandmothers or otherwise.

“Instead of focusing on his employees’ age and marital status, the sheik ought to worry about their training and safety record. Not too long ago, a damaged Qatar Airways jet took nearly 300 people on a 13-hour flight from Miami to Doha despite crashing into lighting structures upon takeoff after its pilots decided to use only two-thirds of the available runway. Rather than spending his time denigrating U.S. carriers, I recommend he take a closer look at his own operation.”

Founded in 1963, the Allied Pilots Association — the largest independent pilots union in the United States — is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. APA represents the 15,000 pilots of American Airlines, including several hundred pilots on full-time military leave of absence serving in the armed forces. The union’s website is AlliedPilots.org. American Airlines is the world’s largest passenger airline.
