ALLIED PILOTS THANKS SEN. BARBARA BOXER, BILL COSPONSORS FOR "SAFE SKIES ACT OF 2015"
FORT WORTH, Texas (June 19, 2015) — Allied Pilots Association President Capt. Keith Wilson issued the following statement regarding the "Safe Skies Act of 2015" (S.1612), which Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) has reintroduced, along with bill cosponsors Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA), Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NM) and Sen. Al Franken (D-MN):
"We are grateful to Sen. Boxer and the other lawmakers who have cosponsored the 'Safe Skies Act of 2015' for their commitment to advancing air safety. Sen. Boxer is right — it's just good common sense to ensure that pilots of passenger aircraft and cargo aircraft operate under the same safety standards. After all, we share the same airspace, runways and taxiways, and we need to have the same opportunity to achieve adequate rest. The current exemption from flight- and duty-time rules for cargo carriers makes no sense. Instead, we must have industry-standard rules for all of our nation's professional pilots to ensure one level of air safety."
Founded in 1963, the Allied Pilots Association — the largest independent pilots union in the United States — is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. APA represents the 15,000 pilots of American Airlines and US Airways, including several hundred pilots on full-time military leave of absence serving in the armed forces. The union's website is www.alliedpilots.org. American Airlines is the world's largest passenger airline.
