It’s a New Day at APA

Fellow APA members,

First and foremost, I want to thank the selfless individuals who put their names in the hat to run for union office, and those who have recently left. Union work can be immensely rewarding but requires great personal sacrifice. The fact that so many members stepped up to dedicate themselves toward securing our professional needs is encouraging beyond words. This bodes well for our union’s future!

Over the next few weeks, I will endeavor to put our members back in control of their union.  I will direct the Negotiating Committee to initiate polling about the direction our union will take. I will require the dozens of presidential committee appointees serving this association to comply with the provisions of the Policy Manual (“those who serve the Association should neither lose nor gain income”) or they will be removed. I will also request that those who I appoint to a committee sign a voluntary pledge not to defect to management. Additionally, there will be some changes to the personnel on our standing committees, especially in those areas where management has sought to leverage our cooperation by forced compliance.

But most importantly, Vice President FO Chris Torres and I will work to change the “status quo” at this union and transform the organization into a member advocacy organization that truly advocates for its members. This has, unfortunately, not always been the case in the past.

Moving forward, I have vowed to dedicate every waking moment of my time to transforming this union while obtaining the contractual improvements this membership – so dedicated to AA’s overburdened operation – is deserving of and long overdue in receiving. I fully intend to deliver on that promise, sooner rather than later. It’s a new day at APA, and I’m all in. I trust you will join me.
