Allied Pilots Association to Picket at New York Stock Exchange Today
FORT WORTH, Texas (June 2, 2022) – The Allied Pilots Association (APA), representing the 14,000 pilots of American Airlines, will emphasize the need for reforms at American Airlines during informational picketing from 1-3 p.m. Eastern near the New York Stock Exchange.
Hundreds of American Airlines pilots, other workers from the airline, and pilots from other carriers will participate in the picketing. APA is also conducting simultaneous pilot rallies at nine other locations across the country.
“We’re all tired of American Airlines being the industry laggard,” said APA President Capt. Eric Ferguson. “It’s time to fix American Airlines, and it’s time for American Airlines to listen to its front-line leadership — its pilots.”
Ferguson cited J.D. Power’s recently released 2022 North American Airline Satisfaction Study, which ranked American Airlines in last place for first-class passengers, as evidence of the need for change. The airline ranked number eight in the economy category, ahead of only two other carriers.
“American Airlines continues to overpromise and underdeliver, selling tickets for flights it cannot operate,” he said. “Just this past weekend, American Airlines canceled several hundred flights. Our passengers deserve better.”
APA and American Airlines management have been in negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement since January 2019.
“APA's proposals are designed to make American Airlines more reliable,” he said. “Our goal is for American Airlines to be the airline of choice for new-hire pilots, passengers, and investors. Right now, that’s not the case.”
Founded in 1963, the Allied Pilots Association — the largest independent pilots union in the United States — is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. APA represents the 14,000 pilots of American Airlines, including several hundred pilots on full-time military leave of absence serving in the armed forces. The union’s website is AlliedPilots.org.
