Allied Pilots Association: “We Thank the White House and Congress for This Landmark, Bipartisan Investment in Our Nation’s Future”

FORT WORTH, Texas (March 27, 2020) – The Allied Pilots Association (APA), representing the 15,000 pilots of American Airlines, expressed its gratitude to the White House and Congress for enacting into law the “Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARE).”

APA President Capt. Eric Ferguson released the following statement in response to President Trump’s signing of the bill:

“We thank the White House and Congress for this landmark, bipartisan investment in our nation’s future and for providing a much-needed measure of certainty. In particular, we would like to acknowledge President Trump, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy for their strong leadership. We also want to recognize the selflessness shown by congressional staff, who have put in long hours in challenging circumstances to help craft this legislation.

“Throughout this crisis — despite the many unknowns associated with COVID-19 — airline pilots have likewise continued to perform their duties as ‘Essential Critical Infrastructure Workers,’ safely carrying passengers, medical materials and other vital freight. The airlines serve as a critical component of the U.S. economy, and they also play an important role in our national security.

“Meanwhile, our pilots and their families have sent thousands of messages to lawmakers in recent days urging swift passage of the CARE Act. In these messages, they emphasized that by investing in the airline industry, policymakers will be helping to preserve essential infrastructure and the jobs of hundreds of thousands of hard-working men and women.

“In our recent discussions with lawmakers, we have reminded them that the employees of American Airlines have been on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, and that we are united in our desire to help lead the way through this crisis.”

Founded in 1963, the Allied Pilots Association — the largest independent pilots union in the United States — is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. APA represents the 15,000 pilots of American Airlines, including several hundred pilots on full-time military leave of absence serving in the armed forces. The union’s website is AlliedPilots.org.
