Allied Pilots Association Endorses Safe Landings Act

FORT WORTH, Texas (Aug. 8, 2019) — The Allied Pilots Association (APA), representing the 15,000 pilots of American Airlines, endorsed the Safe Landings Act, a bill that would make the U.S. commercial aviation industry even safer.

Rep. Mark DeSaulnier introduced the Safe Landings Act today at San Francisco International Airport, which was the site of a crash in 2013 (Asiana Airlines Flight 214) as well as a near-miss in 2017 (Air Canada Flight 759). The legislation calls for:

  • Developing technology that would alert pilots and air traffic controllers when a plane is not aligned with its intended runway.
  • Modernizing the “notices to airmen” (NOTAM) system so that the notices are more effective and user-friendly.
  • Establishing an FAA Task Force on Human Factors in Aviation Safety that would research best practices and issue recommendations.

“We applaud Representative DeSaulnier for introducing this legislation,” said Captain Eric Ferguson, President of the Allied Pilots Association. “Our nation’s airlines have had an enviable safety record for more than a decade, and the Safe Landings Act can help ensure that continues.”

Founded in 1963, the Allied Pilots Association — the largest independent pilots union in the United States — is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. APA represents the 15,000 pilots of American Airlines, including several hundred pilots on full-time military leave of absence serving in the armed forces. The union’s website is AlliedPilots.org.
