An APA First: Union President to Testify on Capitol Hill

APA President CA Dan Carey will become our union’s first national officer to testify on Capitol Hill when he participates in the House Transportation Aviation Subcommittee’s hearing tomorrow on the Boeing 737 MAX.

According to a subcommittee statement, “The hearing is intended to gather views and perspectives from aviation stakeholders regarding the Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 accidents, the resulting international grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, and actions needed to ensure the safety of the aircraft before returning them to service.”

CA Carey’s written testimony has already garnered coverage in The Washington Post. He plans to tell the subcommittee that “the members of APA are offended by remarks made by those who seem to blame the pilots killed in those two crashes. … To make the claim that these accidents would not happen to U.S.-trained pilots is presumptuous and not supported by fact.”

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Eastern on June 19. You can watch it here.

Other witnesses scheduled to testify include:

  • Retired CA Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger
  • Sara Nelson, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA’s international president
  • Randy Babbitt, a former FAA administrator
  • Sharon Pinkerton, Airlines for America’s senior vice president of legislative and regulatory policy
